MOLINE, Ill. - Over 200 U.S. newspaper Web sites will participate next week in World IPv6 Day.
The Internet Society (ISOC) is sponsoring World IPv6 Day on Wednesday, June 8 as a one-day 'test flight' of Web sites that support the IPv6 protocol.
Google, Yahoo, Akamai, Facebook, Comcast, Time-Warner and other major Internet companies will participate in the "test flight." According to initial registrations, the only U.S. newspapers participating are clients of TownNews.com.
These 200 newspaper Web sites all use Townnews.com's new BLOX Content Management System. By participating, TownNews.com continues to prove its ability to bring newspapers to the next level.
Currently, IPv4 is the standard protocol for Internet Protocol addresses, or IP addresses. A transition from IPv4 to the newest Internet Protocol, IPv6, is necessary because IPv4 is running out of available IP addresses.
"This is a big deal," said Chris Murley, director of network operations for TownNews.com. "Without IPv6, the Internet would run out of addresses. This new technology allows us to understand the Web's cutting-edge technology."
TownNews.com runs two major data centers in New York City and Chicago. "We basically were close to running out of IP (internet protocol) addresses, so it was a natural that we participate in this Web technology," Murley added.
TownNews.com, based in Moline, Ill., is majority owned by Lee Enterprises (LEE), a premier publisher of daily, weekly, online and specialty publications. TownNews.com hosts more than 1,500 online publications, and offers a wide variety of products and services to U.S. newspapers. For more information, visit www.townnews.com.
