At BLOX Digital, we believe success starts with finding the right people. The work we do here is changing the local media industry, and these are the people who are making it happen. Today we shine a light on Stephanie Carey, sales director.
What is your background?
I started my career as a features reporter for one of our clients, The Rocky Mount Telegram. A year in, I wrote a story about public radio and in turn, the public radio station recruited me to be their Eastern North Carolina bureau chief. But it came with a catch: I was also simultaneously working as the news director for two commercial radio stations in Rocky Mount.
It was a wild ride that planted the seed for sales in me, but I wasn't quite ready to hang my journalism hat. I eventually took a job that was 100% public radio as the Morning Edition host. A windy path brought me back home to Kansas City where I dabbled in marketing and editorial syndication before working for a contesting platform for seven years. Most recently, I was co-owner for The Pitch from 2018 to 2021.
What do you love most about your job?
I love helping our clients with every aspect of their business by pulling from decades of experience with creative solutions and the best technology in the industry.
What are you currently working on that you'd like everyone to know more about?
Since I'm still pretty new to BLOX Digital, I'm working on getting to know my clients and prospecting to folks who are not yet using us. I'm also excited to explore new verticals including more B2B publications, marketing content houses, and podcast networks. I'm also chomping at the bit to get to bring some upcoming, exciting new products to our clients. Stay tuned!
What are you most excited about for the future of the news industry?
I recently attended a few college media conferences where I met the future of journalism. I have to tell you: it is very, very bright. The students I met were excited, engaged, and tuned in. It was absolutely refreshing to see this new energy and enthusiasm. I was, however, reminded I am old enough to be a mom to this generation when I told a young woman I loved her shoes, but I would break my ankle wearing the high heels. She responded, "Wow, that's what my mom says."
What's something people don't know about you?
I was once my college mascot (a buffalo). All I can say is, that costume is hot and stinky! But I did enjoy jumping around like a fool on the basketball court.
