Tags can help readers see how an asset is related to other assets and locate content on your site. They can also help you organize and share content on your site. There are 5 different types of BLOX asset tags: sections, keywords, geolocations, sites, and flags. So what does each tag do? How can you use them? Do you have to use all of them? These are some of the questions that I'll answer.
Section Tags are used to determine what section the asset should be assigned to. You can assign an asset to more than one section, which allows articles and other assets to appear in multiple sections without the need to duplicate the entry. For example, if you have an article on baseball you would want to section tag it to your sports section and maybe also to your news section. Most assets should be assigned to at least one section tag. You can set up or edit section tags by going to the BLOX CMS Desktop>Settings>Tags>Sections.
Keyword Tags are used to add words or phrases to the asset, making searching for content on both the front end and in the administrative interface faster and more reliable. These keywords also help with search engine optimization (SEO), so we recommend using 5 or more keyword tags on each asset. Having the semantic analysis tool set up on your site can help you select the keywords to use by giving you suggestions based on the content of your article.
Topic pages are automatically generated by the system based on how assets are tagged. When a reader clicks on a tag associated with an article, they will be redirected to a Topic page that drills into the database to find similarly tagged articles, photos and videos. Items with the same tags can also be set up to pull from YouTube and Flickr. When Topic pages get hit by spiders, the spiders jump the link and index the Topic page itself giving your site high ranking for this topic. Keywords are automatically added as you add them to the assets, but you can edit them by going to the BLOX CMS Desktop>Settings>Tags>Keywords.
GeoLocation tags are used to give some geographical relevance to an asset such as a city, county or state in your area. You can assign an asset to more than one location. This tag is optional, but your site might find it useful. You can set up new section tags by going to the BLOX CMS Desktop>Settings>Geolocations.
Site tags are used to make the asset available in an export to another site. For example, you might give an asset a site tag of "townnews" and then a job would be set up to send assets tagged "townnews" to townnews.com. This could also be set up to mark content for a third party site such as Twitter.
Flag tags are used by blocks to designate which content is pulled in. For example, the breaking news block will bring in assets that have the flag of "breaking". Also, some blocks will create an icon next to the headline of assets that have these tags. For example, if you have an asset with the flag tag of "developing", it will have an icon next to the headline that says developing. This tag will need to be used on items that you want to display in your breaking news or featured blocks. Flag tags are created by the software and can't be created or edited.
Using all the tags won't be necessary on all assets but section and keyword tags should be used on most of your assets. Flag tags will be used on assets that you want appear in a particular area, like breaking news or featured stories. Site and geolocation tags will only be used if your site wants to utilize that feature.
